Berugeru is a project that is now over two years old. There would be a lot of terms to define it briefly, like a clicker, a cinematic or a simulation... But from a personal point of view, I've seen it more like a search.
Initially, the idea came from a friend during the lockdown. He had drawn a pixel-art hamburger on Photoshop and shared it with me. He then described me an image he had in mind, in relation to this same hamburger. He wanted to reproduce a visual inspired by MacDonald advertasings, the kind of advertasing where, on a black background, the ingredients of the hamburger filmed in close-up fall one by one in slow motion, letting bursts of fat and freshness gush out, with the sweet noise of food that flatters our ears. I told him that with the means at hand, it was possible.
This is how the Berugeru game was born, we managed to make it in a few days. A goalless and absurd game, unpretentious, but that we enjoyed making and sharing. In itself, it had no sequel.
Then a year later we talk about it again. The chance wanted us to eat a hamburger at the same time. This simple conversation, which must have lasted four minutes at most, strangely made me want to look back on the project, so that it becomes "bigger".
Today I wouldn't really know summing up this project precisely, as I have gone through so much different phases of reflection. It is quite possible that in the future, my outlook will change again. As unlikely as the concept is, this hamburger taught me a lot of things, especially about how I perceive the video game medium and also, about what I like to find when I explore them.
If the result gives what it is today, it is because this project was totally improvised, both during its launch and during its production. The mountains of hamburgers, the black hole, the top bread, then the finger and the two possible choices, the representation of the endings, and so many details still, were only ideas that came one after the other, as I added features to the program.
Some would say, rightly, that this is probably the worst method to adopt to create a game. But this vision of cosmic hamburger would never have came to my mind if I had not given enough time to my ideas for they mature. This time, to analyze what I was creating, everytime enabled me to imagine what is next, and also, enabled me to reflect on why I was doing all of that.
The more I've developed this project, the more I've found in Berugeru parallels with personal aspirations that were close to my heart. The most significant, I would say, would be the idea that we don't necessarily need to understand what drives us to do something, the most important thing is to do it.
This "almost-game", as I like to call it, is just a buildup of ideas with no real link between them, each of which was only thought from the previous one. As such, I understood very little of what I was doing, yet I was doing it. Often, I thought back to this famous adage which dictates that a work is never finished. I never stopped wanting to add new elements, because I still had to tell. And even though the idea of putting in an inordinate amount of effort for only ten minutes of play made me laugh, I had the feeling that stopping everything would be a waste. This finished project, even if it does not lead to anything, allowed me and will allow me to discover things of which until now I was completely unaware of the existence. This so precious profit of initiatives and ideas always makes you want to find others, then others, and again.
I ended up understanding that through all these images, Berugeru was telling his own construction.
At the end of this project, I had this implacable emptiness that we feel after having accomplished something that lasted a long time, this mix of relief and relapse, which occurs when suddenly, the destination is reached. Moving on seems difficult. But the memories persist and carry us forward.

At first I was thinking about why the hamburgers were piled up and such, but the ending made it all make sense.
